A bank, a mercantile store, a boarding house, a drug store, a railroad depot, three cotton gins, a post office, blacksmith shops, a school, several churches, and gristmills. Bogart was incorporated in 1905, and its town history lists all of those from its thriving early days. It's a small place with a fair amount of story behind it.

The town was originally named for the Creek-Seminole leader Osceola. Many of its early settlers arrived through Georgia's Land Lottery of 1820. What really changed things was the railroad. When the line from Athens to Atlanta was built in the 1890s, life in Bogart flourished.

Bogart also sits across a county line. The city lies in both Oconee and Clarke counties. By 2024 estimates, most residents live on the Oconee side and a smaller share on the Clarke side. The whole town covers roughly 2.4 square miles.

That county line has its own history. Watkinsville served as the seat of Clarke County until 1872, when the General Assembly moved the seat to Athens. Residents in the southwestern part of the county wanted a county of their own, and in 1875 the General Assembly created Oconee County from that piece of Clarke. Watkinsville became its county seat and still is. The county takes its name from the Oconee River, which flows along part of its eastern border.

The land around Bogart is Piedmont country, and all of Oconee County sits within the Upper Oconee River sub-basin of the Altamaha River basin. Roads tell the rest of the story. US 78 runs through this area, and the segment from Bogart to Washington was paved by the middle of 1934. Southeast of town, State Route 316 meets US 78 and State Route 10.
