The name comes with a story. According to tradition, Buckhead, GA was named for a pioneer incident in which hunters shot a deer and publicly mounted the buck's head on a tree. To be clear, this page is about the small town of Buckhead in Morgan County, not the uptown district of the same name in Atlanta.

On a map, Buckhead sits in southeastern Morgan County, about 7 miles east-southeast of Madison, the county seat. Interstate 20 passes about a mile south of town, with access from Exit 121 at Seven Islands Road. Following I-20, Atlanta is about 65 miles to the west and Augusta about 85 miles to the east. The town itself covers about 0.8 square miles.

Water shapes the ground around it in two directions. To the north, the town drains toward tributaries of the Apalachee River. To the south, the runoff heads into tributaries of Sugar Creek. Both streams flow southeast to the Oconee River.

The Apalachee has a history of its own. It runs about 74 miles, rising north of Lawrenceville in Gwinnett County and joining the Oconee in Lake Oconee, west of Greensboro. Early in European settlement it was called the Tulapocca, and after that the South Oconee River. Around 1790 it became known as the Apalachee, for reasons that are unknown. Far upstream near Bethlehem, it passes under the Kilgore Mill Covered Bridge, built in 1894.

Lake Oconee came much later. Georgia Power created it in 1979 when it finished Wallace Dam on the Oconee River, and the lake runs through Morgan, Greene, and Putnam counties. Fed by the Oconee and the Apalachee, it has 374 miles of shoreline across 19,971 acres and serves as the reservoir for the Wallace Hydroelectric Plant. On the far side of the dam is its sister lake, Sinclair. The name Oconee itself belonged to an ancient Creek town.

Morgan County was created on December 10, 1807. It lies in the north central Piedmont and the lake country region of Georgia. The county lists the cities of Bostwick, Madison, and Rutledge, the town of Buckhead, and Godfrey, a census-designated place. Since the early 21st century, the county has seen a housing boom, so new construction now shares the map with older homes.
