Eatonton is an easy town to like. It's the seat of Putnam County, and it has been since 1808. Everything still circles the courthouse square, and the blocks north of it are where most of the old houses stand. Walk Washington, Madison, or Jefferson Avenue and you'll pass Greek Revival and Queen Anne homes under big oaks, a lot of them inside the Eatonton Historic District.

This is also a town with a long literary memory. Joel Chandler Harris was born here in 1845, and the Uncle Remus Museum on Oak Street tells his story in a pair of old log cabins. Alice Walker, who wrote The Color Purple, was born in Eatonton in 1944. Folks around here are proud of both names, and you'll see them on signs and driving tours all over the county.

Step outside the city limits and the picture changes. Putnam County has deep farm roots, especially dairy, and you'll still find farmhouses, barns, and long gravel drives off the state highways. Mixed in are older brick ranches, manufactured homes on a few acres, and newer houses that went up as the lakes brought people in. Out toward the Rock Eagle effigy mound and the 4-H center, the houses get fewer and the woods get thicker.

Then there's the water. Lake Sinclair filled in 1953 and Lake Oconee in 1979, and both reach into Putnam County east of town. Some homes on the coves are full-time, some are weekend places, and a lot of them sit under tall pines that drop needles straight into the roof valleys. North and northwest of Eatonton, the Oconee National Forest covers a big stretch of land. Between the lakes, the forest, and the hardwoods in town, most roofs here spend part of the day in shade.
