Greensboro has been the seat of Greene County since the 1780s, when the legislature carved the county out of the western part of Washington County. It was named for General Nathanael Greene, who led American troops at the Battle of Guilford Court House in 1781. The town sits between the Ogeechee and Oconee rivers, about halfway between Atlanta and Augusta on Interstate 20. For a long stretch of the 1800s and early 1900s it was a cotton town. The Georgia Railroad reached Greensboro in 1838 to haul the crop, and the Mary-Leila Cotton Mill opened in 1899. You can still read that history in the buildings downtown. Part of Sherman's army briefly occupied the town in November 1864, as a feint toward Augusta.

When we talk to homeowners in Greene County, the roofs tend to fall into three groups.

The first is in town. Downtown Greensboro is a lively historic district with shops, the Greene County Historic Museum, the Calvin Barber Museum and African-American Resource Center, and the Greene County Courthouse, a Greek Revival building finished in 1849. Around the square are streets of houses that have watched a lot of years go by. When one of them has an asphalt shingle roof, that's the roof we come to look at. Shade trees and gutters full of leaves come with the territory.

The second group sits out by the water. Greensboro is about 5 miles east of Lake Oconee, and plenty of people live or vacation along its shores, including in the Reynolds Lake Oconee community. Some houses are lived in year-round and some only on weekends. The Forest Service's Redlands Recreation Area, a boating and picnic spot, sits on the Greene County side of the lake too. A wooded lake lot is lovely, right up until you look at the shaded side of the roof.

The third group is out in the county. The Oconee National Forest starts about 2 miles northwest of town and covers more than 26,000 acres in Greene County alone, including Scull Shoals, where the remains of an old river community still stand along the Oconee River. Silt washed down from upstream cotton fields during the 1800s and buried the old shoals there. Farmhouses and homes on acreage out here are surrounded by pine and hardwood, and roofs see a mix of deep shade and open sun depending on which way the house faces.
