Union Point didn't start with that name. Before the railroad, the spot was known as Thornton's Crossroads, after Redmon Thornton, whose home stood near where the old Augusta to Athens wagon road crossed the route from Washington through Greensboro to Eatonton.

The railroad changed everything. The legislature chartered the Georgia Railroad late in 1833, and the line came west out of Augusta. Where it split, one branch running northwest to Athens and the other heading west through Greensboro toward Atlanta, a junction grew up. That meeting of the rails is the "union" in Union Point. The first train pulled in around 1839, and for years trains stopped here to take on water and fuel while passengers ate and changed cars. The town was laid out in the 1830s and became an incorporated city in 1904, by which point it had grown from roughly 500 people in 1897 toward the 1,000 it reached by 1906. Passenger service faded after World War II and was gone by the 1970s.

Then came the mill. In 1897 local families started building what became the Union Manufacturing Company on Sibley Avenue, making cotton underwear and later socks and yarn. In 1972 it merged with Charles Chipman's Sons and became Chipman-Union, and it ran until 2001. The mill complex went on the National Register in 1989.

Two years later, in 1991, much of the town joined it. The Union Point Historic District is roughly bounded by Lamb Avenue, Washington Road, Old Crawfordville Road, and Hendry Street, and its houses run from Queen Anne to Colonial Revival to Craftsman bungalows. Downtown grew up along Sibley Avenue.

So what does all that mean for a roof? It means a lot of houses in town have been around a long while. Where one of them carries an asphalt shingle roof, that's the roof we come to see. Out past the city limits it's eastern Greene County: farmland, pasture, and woods. Over the years the area also had a dairy industry, a cottonseed oil mill, and a run of timber sales in the 1920s. Today the houses out there sit on open lots or tucked into pines and hardwoods, and plenty of yards have both. Leaves and needles build up in valleys, shaded slopes stay wet after a rain, and the sunny side takes a beating every summer.
