Madison is the seat of Morgan County. The town was incorporated in December 1809 and named for James Madison, the fourth president. Morgan County itself was created in December 1807. Madison sits on a ridge, roughly 691 feet up, that runs across the county from northeast to southwest. Rain on the south side of that ridge drains toward Sugar Creek and the Oconee River, while the north side drains by way of Mill Branch into Hard Labor Creek and on to the Apalachee River. Plenty of that water passes through somebody's gutters first.

A lot of what makes Madison look the way it does traces back to cotton. Between about 1840 and 1860 the town filled with grand homes, and Bonar Hall, a brick house built in 1839, is one of the first.

Today Madison's National Register district ranks among Georgia's largest. It was listed in 1974, and after its boundaries grew in 1990 it covered 356 contributing buildings. Right in the middle is the Morgan County Courthouse, a Beaux Arts building from 1905 with a domed cupola. Around it are Greek Revival homes like the Carter-Newton House and Heritage Hall, and a three-story Italian-style town house called Boxwood.

Hard Labor Creek State Park covers close to 5,800 acres between Bostwick and Rutledge, with two lakes built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, an 18-hole public golf course, and Georgia State University's Hard Labor Creek Observatory. Part of the Oconee National Forest reaches into Morgan County too, and Lake Oconee touches the county as well. Out there, homes sit on acreage with pines and hardwoods on every side.

Shade and old oaks are the common thread. In town, big trees hang over a lot of rooflines. In the county, woods surround the house. Either way, leaves pile up, some slopes stay damp, and the exposed sides take the full force of a Georgia summer, which brings long hot spells and storms that build up late in the day.
